Advertising in general has this problem. Sure, on average men are interested in and like cars more, but women still drive cars as often as men do. Yet, unless its a minivan, car commercials almost exclusively target men. This probably even has something to do with why women are not as interested in cars in the first place. Women are told since childhood that they do not really like cars and advertising is a big culprit in that.

This seems even more irritating because it's obvious that for almost every mom there is a dad there too.

The honest truth is though that these big marketing companies have done their research and they're really only trying to advertise the most effective way possible. There is no doubt this is working for them.

I hadn't considered explicitly to be irritated by it, that's how ingrained sexism can be, but you're absolutely right. Implying that women need to do all the parenting work hurts everybody.

I have it in the center part of the crib as well. You can always use some of those 3M cord holders to keep your LO from grabbing it in the future. I actually just used painters tape temporarily which turned out to be quite permanent until we moved. LOL! Prob not the safest but it worked. Plus, I was able to see when he was grabbing the cord... which is why I taped it up to the side of the crib where he couldn't grab it if that makes sense. I'll prob use a more secure solution at our new place which might be using those 3M cord holders.

We didn't do the three foot rule, but used plenty of cord keepers so it's tight to the wall. We centered it over the crib as well.

Hey Dads (and Moms), You can really speak to any of the securing you've done around the house to protect LO from your house (and likewise your house from LO). But in trying to set up the nursery I'm facing a dilemma about the placement of the video baby monitor, so I wanted to get some insight from those of you who've installed video monitors and how you handled the placement.

I feel like the most ideal placement for a video monitor is to mount it on the wall centered over the crib, but the power cord they give you is so short and cords need to be 3 feet from the crib. So I feel like the most ideal thing might be to poke a hole in the wall by where I want to mount it and then another in the wall down by the baseboard so I can snake the power cord up to the monitor. Then just run an extension cord from the nearest outlet to under the crib to plug in the cable.

Maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing to put it high on a shelf beside the crib, but the way we have the crib setup, the baby will be blocked by the side of the crib and/or the mobile.

@MrMB: many congratulations, sir. Can you even remember what you ate for that lunch?

For us, DW was in the bathroom one morning getting ready for work and then came out showing me the positive pregnancy test. I think that she was so shocked/pleased that she didn't try to do anything surprising or complicated about revealing it to me. And then there was a least a few minutes where our conversation must have sounded like the teachers from Charlie Brown: wuh-wuh-wuh, wuh-wuh, wuh-wuh-wuh.

I completely agree with @mrbee: for the first hour or two when I was at work, I was definitely useless, as all I could think about was "we're pregnant, we're pregnant, we're..." and on and on.

@MrMB: Wow, that's fantastic!!!

My wife got pregnant four times... the first two times were miscarriages, but they were the most exciting times in terms of news. She told me in a really clever way the first time that night when I got home from work, and I was so totally floored by the news that I couldn't even tell you what that clever way was anymore!

It's like when I proposed to her: she said that once I proposed, she didn't hear anything else I said. I think it was the same way when she first told me she was pregnant!!

Hey dads, Last week when DW innocuously wanted to meet up for a lunch date I have to admit getting the good news wasn't something on my mind. I mean, we had been trying for a little while so it wasn't like I was completely blindsided, but still she did a good job catching me off guard. When she picked me up from work, she told me she had something for me and pointed to a bag on the floor by my feet. When I peeked inside I found a few baby outfits and a positive pregnancy test. After a couple "For real?...Yes!" exchanges it of course got super emotional, and we were both beaming all throughout lunch. Made for quite the conversation piece. On the car ride to and from, I kept looking in the bag as if to try to reassure myself that I hadn't just imagined this.

So where were you when you got the news and how did she tell you?

We have tried it as well. You almost have to trust it will work because you will always be waiting for when LO stops crying. The first few days it was like trying to get in at the last minute but we kept saying LO will tire and sleep soon. It did get better but some travel plans later in a few months but LO off track and we had to do it all over again but not as bad.

I see no reason that you absolutely need a "diaper" bag. All those compartments are nice, but not needed if you are somewhat organized. When Mrs Jacks had business trips and Little Jacks and I would tag along, I would bring my mountain hardware backpack as my "diaper bag."

http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Hueco%E2%84%A2-34/OU4055,default,pd.html

That is a newer model of the one that I have. I would use it for day trips, so I would have changed of clothes for me and little jacks, snacks and lunch for the both of us, water, diapers, wipes, laptop, and other miscellaneous stuff that one might need in a pinch. All that would be in the main compartment.

Little Jacks would ride in the Ergo baby up front and the backpack on my back would balance things out. We toured Denver and Baltimore on foot for several days like that and had no problems.

We had similar issues around 4 months as well. Our problems were because she was getting out of the wrap so we had to take it away and she kept on waking herself up with random moroings. This was just something that we worked through and only took a few nights before she was back to her normal sleep habits.

With that said, we did not want to go with the cry it out method of any kind. Almost everyone I know that has done one of these methods has had issues with naps later on, and since I was a stay at home dad who also worked from home, I needed naps to be as regular as possible.

We are now at 7 months with jack jack and she is sleeping from 7-7 at night with no wake ups and in her crib. We just worked with her for a long time to get her to that point. It took us a long time, but now we can set her down awake and walk away and she falls asleep within minutes, and there was no cry it out involved.

When it came to Little Jacks, we co-slept. She is 2 1/2 now and still sleeps in our bed. We personally do not mind co-sleeping but that is just us.

@MrOceanis: My wife has a real hard time listening to him cry and it's not easy for me either. We've had improvements since the 1st night. He's slept longer, only eating once at night now and he goes right back to sleep after only a minute of shh'ing. He seems to be taking better daytime naps also. We're not quite to the point where he is sleeping all night, but he's had some pretty regular 5-6 hour stretches. This is working much better than rocking him for 30 minutes with him screaming the whole time.

I'm looking for the Dad's input only on this one....

...And parenting is like cooking - everybody seasons their recipe just a little different than the next guy. Personally, I marinate my ribeyes before grilling them :-D.

Our son will be 4 months old tomorrow and he started his '4 month sleep regression' somewhere around 3-4 weeks ago. He had been sleeping from about 8pm-4am with no interruptions before this new pattern developed. We have laid him down awake in his crib and he's fallen asleep without crying before, so we know it's possible. Since he started this new sleeping pattern he has been difficult to console at night. He screams and cries no matter what you do to try to comfort him. He sleeps well for the first 3 hours and then he screams every 45-90 minutes after that. We have always swaddled him and tried variations of that(one arm out, both arms out) to try to make him happier, but nothing seemed to help.

My wife mentioned the Ferber method as an option that she'd heard about on the forum and websites that might help. We read up on it briefly and after our pediatrician suggested "let him cry it out" we were willing to try something new. Every kid is different, so it's hard to say if this method will work over any other method.

I'm curious if any of the dads have tried this and what their opinions are? Was it hard to stomach listening to him cry? Was it successful? What did you vary, if anything?

We're only into night 2 and so far we've noticed an improvement with his sleep patterns and mannerisms in the first night. He didn't fight our short efforts to console him and fell back asleep MUCH faster than before when we would hold him and rock him. I'm interested to see how this works out for us and how it has worked out for others.
