I read quite a few dad preparation books which made everything sound like shooting a space rocket to the moon by NASA.

Our first one was in NICU so I soon realized that you can read all you want but it is much more important to trust the doctors as they will guide you accordingly.

Maybe something to do with local culture as we had our kids in Tokyo, at a Japanese hospital where talking back and not trusting doctors is a very much not practiced. The more you asked and got involved the more you understood

This post has definitely given me some good ideas. :)

I started off with "What to Expect When You're Expecting" (http://amzn.com/0761148574) to prepare for the 9-month journey and then tried reading "Happiest Baby on the Block" (http://amzn.com/0553381466) for once LO arrives.

I have to agree. Though the AAP book is a very heave read, it is great for learning stuff here and there. I would pick and choose the chapters I would read based on my interest and areas that I knew the least in. I also put this book down the moment our first child was born and only picked it up every once in a while when I ran into issues I felt were caused by something I was doing.

I'm not a big fan of getting information overload from books, I think that can overtake our own instincts and general common sense. Obviously books have a place and can be a help. I've just seen some parents who spend all their time reading how to be a great parent and neglect their child in the process. Learning from interacting with your child can be far better than learning from a book.

That said, there are some I look at now and then. I've not read this yet, but it looks like an interesting approach to current problems in raising and nurturing.

Ha! Mrs. Jacks bought me this:
http://www.amazon.com/Caring-Your-Young-Child-Edition/dp/0553386301/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346983036&sr=8-1&keywords=aap
It is a damn heavy read but is very informative... but then again, what else would you expect from a doctor?
