I never did too much research myself. But I did selectively read chapters in the AAP book (its a heavy read but it has good information for just about every situation):
http://www.amazon.com/Caring-Your-Young-Child-Edition/dp/0553386301/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346983036&sr=8-1&keywords=aap

Another one that I read that I would recommend to every parent who is not carrying the child to be was this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Girlfriends-Guide-Pregnancy-Vicki-Iovine/dp/141652472X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1346983585&sr=1-1&keywords=a+girlfriends+guide+to+pregnancy

It may be a bit cheesy but it also gave me a lot of insite into what my wife was going through durring the pregnancy.

@mrbee: A lot of times he is awake when we lay him in his crib. Sometimes we have to rock him to sleep.

@mrbee: At first we just swaddled him and he would fall asleep pretty easily. Now it's a routine that the wife came up with: bath, dinner, swaddle, sing, rock then crib. He does pretty good with that most of the time. When he was first born, we were changing his diapers in the middle of the night but the wife read something about how it's not necessary (he only has wet diapers at night). Now she does a drive-by style feeding in the middle of the night and he usually goes back down pretty easily. Diaper changes were just riling him up and making it harder for him to go back to sleep.

@Colby: I definitely agree most of fatherhood comes naturally!

Curious though about how you and your wife managed getting the baby down for the evening (and night wakeups).... I found that to be the area where I was least prepared and kind of lost.

I didn't do much research and I've found that it's not as complicated as the books may make it seem. My wife and I attended the newborn/breastfeeding/birthing classes and they helped introduce us to the basics of caring for a newborn.

I wouldn't stress on studying up on how to be a father, most of it will come natural. Having a nurse call phone number at the pediatrician's office helps with the oddball questions, so be sure to check if that's available when you choose a pediatrician.

My advice - be patient....and that's easier said than done.

I think it totally depends on you! Just like not all moms read all 50 million baby books before baby arrives not all fads have to either!

But....I will say if your wife is the type to read up on everything you probably will save yourself some headache by reading up a little on the same materials. :P

Congrats btw of you and your wife are expecting!

@squid: Welcome to Hellobee!! The one thing I would study like crazy ahead of time is baby sleep. This is a great DVD on the subject:

http://www.amazon.com/The-Happiest-Baby-Block-Crying/dp/B0006J021C/

Other than that, most of the other stuff you can figure out on the fly I think. Maybe also read up on good sleep habits. The Weissbluth book here (Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child) is a useful read:

http://www.hellobee.com/2012/01/26/sleep-training-books/

If you really take ownership of your baby's sleep, the result will be much much more bonding and also a happier partner! Plus it's not that hard once you get the hang of it.

I think you can read up on certain areas that interest you but don't geek out because then you might over analyze everything. I never read anything other than my weekly emails and on boards. But I know there are some great informational books out there.

So I realize that this maybe the worst/best place to ask this, but my biggest debate at the moment is in how much research/homework should I do as a future father?

On one side, I get that hellobee and the books and classes out there must make for a wealth of experiences that can be learned from...but on the other hand, I think that there's a certain excitement in trying to figure out life without being over-prepared.

Additionally, my wife has fully committed to the research...so I'll have no problem getting the "cliff's notes." (sounds like a pretty common situation, no?)

So, I guess a good way to re-phrase my question is: looking back, what worked for you or what would you do differently?

Should I become a mildy obsessive student of parenting
or get thrown in the deep end without much of a paddle?
