I'm in business, so I get it - in 2010, only 3.4% of stay-at-home parents were dads:

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/06/17/mr-mom-era-stay-at-home-dads-doubled-over-last-decade/

Still though, dads are often very involved even if they aren't staying at home. I think the numbers understate how many dads are involved in raising their kids.

Here's Amazon's official statement on why they called their diaper/family discount program, Amazon Mom: "Despite the name, you don’t need to be a mom to join. Amazon Mom is open to anyone expecting a baby or caring for a baby or young child, whether you’re a mom, dad, grandparent, or caretaker. We just thought “Amazon Primary Caretaker” didn’t have the same ring to it."

If it were just Amazon, then it wouldn't irritate me that much. But this sort of stuff happens all the time, and it's pretty demeaning. Here's another example, where P&G says that "being a mom is the hardest job in the world," and that they are the "proud sponsor of moms."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NScs_qX2Okk

That's pretty insulting to dads. It's like they couldn't just say it once... they had to really rub it in. I really hate P&G's advertising, as their anti-dadism is truly baked into their ad messaging. At least with Amazon, it's just a single program (Amazon Mom) and not their entire advertising campaign. Unless it's for their shaving cream, in which case they trot out stereotypical male-focused ads.

Does it bother you at all that Amazon calls their diaper/family discount program, "Amazon Mom"? Or that P&G makes it a point to not highlight or mention dads in their advertising?

Hey Dads (and Moms), You can really speak to any of the securing you've done around the house to protect LO from your house (and likewise your house from LO). But in trying to set up the nursery I'm facing a dilemma about the placement of the video baby monitor, so I wanted to get some insight from those of you who've installed video monitors and how you handled the placement.

I feel like the most ideal placement for a video monitor is to mount it on the wall centered over the crib, but the power cord they give you is so short and cords need to be 3 feet from the crib. So I feel like the most ideal thing might be to poke a hole in the wall by where I want to mount it and then another in the wall down by the baseboard so I can snake the power cord up to the monitor. Then just run an extension cord from the nearest outlet to under the crib to plug in the cable.

Maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing to put it high on a shelf beside the crib, but the way we have the crib setup, the baby will be blocked by the side of the crib and/or the mobile.

Hey dads, Last week when DW innocuously wanted to meet up for a lunch date I have to admit getting the good news wasn't something on my mind. I mean, we had been trying for a little while so it wasn't like I was completely blindsided, but still she did a good job catching me off guard. When she picked me up from work, she told me she had something for me and pointed to a bag on the floor by my feet. When I peeked inside I found a few baby outfits and a positive pregnancy test. After a couple "For real?...Yes!" exchanges it of course got super emotional, and we were both beaming all throughout lunch. Made for quite the conversation piece. On the car ride to and from, I kept looking in the bag as if to try to reassure myself that I hadn't just imagined this.

So where were you when you got the news and how did she tell you?

After we created a message board for Hellobee, we soon realized that our membership was turning out to be 99%+ female!

We started doing research into why that was, and found that dads tend to be more active on message boards aimed specifically at dads. So to better serve dads out there, we created a new dad forum that you can find at dads.hellobee.com.

We're keeping the dad forum categories simple for now, but will definitely expand them as the board grows!

If you're a dad, please consider posting here or over at boards.hellobee.com. And if you know a dad, please invite him to join these new boards!

I'm looking for the Dad's input only on this one....

...And parenting is like cooking - everybody seasons their recipe just a little different than the next guy. Personally, I marinate my ribeyes before grilling them :-D.

Our son will be 4 months old tomorrow and he started his '4 month sleep regression' somewhere around 3-4 weeks ago. He had been sleeping from about 8pm-4am with no interruptions before this new pattern developed. We have laid him down awake in his crib and he's fallen asleep without crying before, so we know it's possible. Since he started this new sleeping pattern he has been difficult to console at night. He screams and cries no matter what you do to try to comfort him. He sleeps well for the first 3 hours and then he screams every 45-90 minutes after that. We have always swaddled him and tried variations of that(one arm out, both arms out) to try to make him happier, but nothing seemed to help.

My wife mentioned the Ferber method as an option that she'd heard about on the forum and websites that might help. We read up on it briefly and after our pediatrician suggested "let him cry it out" we were willing to try something new. Every kid is different, so it's hard to say if this method will work over any other method.

I'm curious if any of the dads have tried this and what their opinions are? Was it hard to stomach listening to him cry? Was it successful? What did you vary, if anything?

We're only into night 2 and so far we've noticed an improvement with his sleep patterns and mannerisms in the first night. He didn't fight our short efforts to console him and fell back asleep MUCH faster than before when we would hold him and rock him. I'm interested to see how this works out for us and how it has worked out for others.

mrbee on "Do you ever feel "daddy guilt"?"

I blogged a while ago about how I rarely ever feel daddy guilt:
http://www.hellobee.com/2012/02/16/daddy-guilt/

I actually feel "work guilt" much more often... which actually does make me feel guilty. Because it reminds me that I'm capable of feeling guilt, but I just don't feel guilty very often in my role as a dad.

I was wondering if it's just me, or if anyone else doesn't get daddy guilt very often?

While I'm fine with keeping to his eating and napping schedule, I'm trying to think of more creative things that he and I can do together other than reading him the same baby books, doing tummy time, or propping him up on my lap to watch the soccer!

When we're all out as a family (mom, dad, and the two kids), I always feel like I should be pushing the stroller. Well especially when there are two kids, because the double stroller can be pretty heavy!

That said, I'm sure my wife could handle the double stroller just fine. It's not like pushing a stroller is incredibly difficult. I guess I just feel like it's my responsibility to do things that require more strength, even when the actual act doesn't always require a lot of strength.

If you're pushing a stroller with your partner and child(s), what percentage of the time would you say you push the stroller? Anyone else feel like they should always be pushing the stroller?

I did the remodel on the baby room and tackled a couple of jobs I've never done before. If there is something I don't know how to do, I'll look it up on Youtube lol.

The kids are definitely waking up early... so staying up til 4 am was not the wisest idea. But if my wife and I didn't do it now and then, we'd never have any time together!

Do you ever stay up super late when you know the kids will wake up early?

I have two kids, and usually take charge of watching the older one (2 1/2 years old)... while my wife watches the younger kid (11 months).

I have never watched the 11 month old all day, because she's still breastfeeding and she doesn't like to take a bottle (of pumped breastmilk) except from her nanny. Since I can't handle the feedings by myself, we usually just divide and conquer on the kids. It's an efficient system, and works really well for the whole family.

I think the net result though (and it's entirely my fault) has been that I'm not really that close to my daughter yet... it's something I want to address in the coming weeks. Maybe I just start bottle-feeding her the pumped milk. I dunno? I gotta do something though, because it's not good long term. She's probably going to be breastfed for another 4 months, at least.

Do you ever wonder if breastfeeding is creating distance between you and your child? Do you bottlefeed, or do you just find other ways to spend a lot of time with your child?

I'm looking forward to grilling her boyfriend and tailing him around town in my car to let him know I'm keeping an eye on him.

Actually mostly I'm looking forward to spending time 1:1 with her, and doing things that she enjoys. I really want to encourage her interests and passions, so that will be a big part of my focus. I'll do that with our son as well, but I think it's even more important with a daughter. I've noticed that girls are less likely to be encouraged to pursue an interest than boys, although maybe that's changing.

What father/daughter moments are you looking forward to?
